Trail Log

- Parking lot at Barton Springs.
- 0.7
- CAMPBELL'S HOLE is the first swimming hole up creek from Barton Springs, but it will be pretty yukie unless the creek has been running for a while.
- 1.1
- SPYGLASS ENTRANCE to the right takes you up to the only convenience store near the trail.
- 1.5
- THE ROCK GARDEN is right after the first creek crossing. Take the trail to the right for a challenging array of creek bed rocks, or go straight for a smoother ride on the main trail.
- 3.0
- HIGHLINE TRAIL goes straight with the overhead electric line, when the main trail peals off to the left. There are many smaller, nicer trails off Highline Trail. Be ready to climb.
- 3.3
- TOYSTORE HILL is to your left. Several trails lead up an abrupt 200 foot climb, and many trails wind around. Advanced riders should explore this former NORBA race terrain.
- 3.7
- 360 ENTRANCE goes up hill to your left as you near the highway. This is the easiest climb off the trail. At the top are restrooms and a parking lot. The 360 entrance is a good place to start your ride, if you want to avoid crowds around Barton Springs. Vandalism and theft is more frequent here than other entrances.
- 4.3
- THE CHAIN TRAIL continues on the left side to the creek, and the main trail crosses here. Unless water in the creek stops you, cross the creek and avoid the Chain Trail. If you stay on the Chain Trail, you'll have to carry your bike across a slippery rock ledge while holding on to a chain embedded in the rock. The main trail will soon recross the creek to meet the Chain Trail on the left side of the creek.
- 4.7
- MOPAC (Loop 1). The main trail crosses to the right side of the creek right after the Mopac crossing. From this point for several more miles, there's a trail on both sides of the creek. In dry weather it's fun to stay on the left side of the creek as far as the trail goes, before crossing. In wet weather, the right side of the creek is much better.
- 5.1
- MOPAC ENTRANCE goes up the hill to the right, from the main trail. This is the second easiest climb out of the creek bed. This is the best entrance when the creek is running high, because you can ride 3 miles upstream without having to cross the creek.
- 5.3
- TWIN FALLS is a fantastic swimming hole when the creek is running. When it's dry, Twin Falls is no particular fun.
- 6.5
- SCULPTURED FALLS can be a nice swimming hole even when the creek is dry, since it's fed from water seepage above the pool. If Twin Falls is a flop, try Sculptured Falls. The trail between the two falls is mostly smooth, winding, and beautifully fast.
- 7.3
- THE HILL OF LIFE goes up to your right. This hill was not named by a cyclist--it's a killer to climb and scary to descend. This is the topmost entrance to the Greenbelt. The nearby area is open and grassy and woven with numerous trails. There's a restroom and some picnic tables. The creek is often flowing, with several small falls and nice swimming holes.
- 7.5
- DAM POOL is the nicest swimming hole on the Greenbelt and most often has flowing water.
- 8.0
- The End.

Mountain Bike Resource - Trails - Barton Ride Summary
Ride Description
Barton Creek Greenbelt is the original Texas mountain bike trail. The trail begins in Zilker Park at Barton Springs, a large, clear, cool spring fed swimming hole. It is eight flat, fast miles of curving singletrack, with plenty of challenging sections. The rough sections are short and can easily be walked by the cautious or stormed by gear heads. Side trails, such as Toystore Hill and Hill of Life, provide tough exercise for experts.
Cyclists share the Greenbelt with hikers, swimmers, rock climbers, and unleashed dogs, particularly on weekends. Be prepared to politely share the trail.
Zilker Park has many attractions in addition to the Greenbelt. Barton Springs Pool is the best swimming hole in Texas. There's a huge playscape, a miniature train, frisbee golf, trout fishing, a canoe livery, Austin Nature Center, Zilker Gardens, soccer fields, and more.
In addition to cycling, the Greenbelt also has challenging rock climbing, caves, fossil beds, historical rock corrals, and miles of nature to enjoy. Barton Creek is usually dry near Barton Springs, but during high water, the tubing is thrilling.
There is no drinking water on the trail. During the summer, you'll need two big water bottles or a Camelbak to take you to trail's end and back.
Directions To Trailhead
The trailhead is the parking lot for Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park, just south of Town Lake near downtown Austin. Exit Interstate 35 at Riverside Drive, immediately south of Townlake Bridge, and go west. Before crossing Congress Avenue, go left on Barton Springs Road, which leads you to Zilker Park. The entrance to Barton Springs Pool and the trailhead is a left turn after crossing the Barton Creek bridge.
